WEST SACRAMENTO — After a win Friday night, the Athletics dropped the second game of the rivalry weekend series to San Francisco in a 6-4 loss on Saturday.

Luis Severino went six innings, but the six innings were eventful, including 10 hits, five runs, two walks, and seven strikeouts.

“The ball was up tonight,” Mark Kotsay said Saturday night. “[Willy] Adames took some good at bats; obviously [Casey] Schmitt was an issue. … I think overall, they swung the bats tonight. They hit mistakes.”

Schmitt went 4-5 with two home runs both hit off Severino.

“I don’t think he’s difficult [to face],” Severino said after being asked about Schmitt. “First at-bat, I threw a pitch right in the middle and he took advantage of that. After that, I executed a good pitch — cutter, away. He just hit it and it went to the right field line. I don’t know him that well, I don’t face him that well to know what is his tendency or not, but it was a good game for him.”

Even after falling behind 5-0 at one point in the game, the A’s made it a close contest — an 8th inning three-run homer from Brent Rooker cut the Giants’ lead down, but the rally lost steam after that and concluded with a 1-2-3 bottom of the 9th..

ODDS AND ENDS

Denzel Clarke began a rehab assignment at Low-A Stockton on Saturday and finished 1-3 before being lifted in the 6th for a defensive substitution.

“Denzel reached the point in the progression that he felt really confident about where he was at,” Kotsay said on Saturday. “Denzel will be in Stockton tonight, tomorrow, and then I believe he’ll join the Vegas team as long as things go well to continue his play progression.”

TRANSACTION LOG

The A’s acquired INF Alika Williams from the Pirates in exchange for RHP Kyle Robinson on Saturday. They also traded OF Junior Perez to the White Sox for LHP Jackson Nove.
